Thursday, January 22, 7:00–8:45 p.m. in the Knatvold room
What did MLK say in his last book, Where Do We Go from Here? (published in 1967), and what does it mean for us today? You are invited to attend our session as we discuss King’s legacy and this book in particular. Beacon Press published this book, giving us UUs a special connection to it. While King’s career had focused on civil rights for African Americans, in this book he also took on issues such as militarism and economics. Plenty of King’s supporters disagreed with the direction he laid out in this book, and it includes enough specifics that most readers today can likewise find something to disagree with.
To learn about Where Do We Go from Here?, we recommend this summary found on the website of Stanford’s King Institute. This summary gives us enough material to get the dialogue going. You are of course welcome to read the whole book, as some of us in the Dialogue Group have done.
If you want more, you can read the Ware Lecture that King gave to UUs in 1966, entitled Don’t Sleep through the Revolution. You can also listen to him give his “Other America” speech to Stanford in 1967. This moving speech addresses the then-recent riots and more, and hearing his words in his own voice is powerful.
You’re also invited to join your fellow congregants and take part in the MLK march and rally on MLK Day, January 19. This year's theme is: “Where Do We Go From Here?”
The 4th Principle Dialogue Group promotes the “free & responsible search for truth & meaning,” pursuing the congregational goal of Connected Community. We get to know each other and connect to each other through meaningful, open-hearted dialogue. Drop-ins welcome. Homework not required. See more in UU Connect.
