UNIVERSITY UNITARIAN CHURCH

Music and Art

Interested in getting involved with art and music at UUC? These groups help plan art installations in our building, provide music on Sunday mornings, and gather to connect around shared creative spiritual practices. You can join any of the groups mentioned below by emailing our Congregational Engagement Coordinator.

Art Committee

The Art Committee aims to make visual art an integral component of the UUC building, worship services, and other UUC programs. We select emerging and established local artists to exhibit their work in the Chapel, including occasional exhibits of work by church members. We install the exhibits, host artist receptions and “Meet the Artist” encounters, and care for the artwork that is owned by the church. We may also become involved in finding or commissioning new art for our building. Volunteers come from a range of backgrounds; no special expertise is required! If you are interested in serving on the Art Committee, please contact the UUC office.

All Voices Choir

The All Voices Choir is a friendly, non-audition choir for all ages, singing inspiring folk and contemporary music from around the world. This choir sings at services on 3rd Sundays from September through May, and for special events such as the December Family Candlelight service and the June Flower Communion.

Rehearsals: Weekly on Mondays from 7:00-8:00 pm in the Chapel.

Handbell Choir

The Handbell Choir plays for services once or twice a month, playing a three-and-a-half-octave set of English handbells. Compositions range from early music to 21st century pieces. Members must be able to read music well enough to follow their assigned parts. Contact UUC Music Director Karen Thomas to inquire about joining.

Rehearsals: Weekly on Thursdays from 6:00-7:15 pm in the Chapel.

Loft Choir

The Loft Choir performs pieces from a vast repertoire of classical and world choral compositions. The choir brings to life 1000 years of choral music from dozens of countries, languages, and traditions. The Loft Choir prepares weekly anthems and service music, and sings at services on the first, second, fourth, and fifth Sundays of the month from September through early June. They perform two major works with orchestra each year, on Sundays in November and May. Section leaders are professional vocalists, and soloists in the Loft Choir. Loft Choir members must have previous choral or instrumental experience and basic music-reading skills. Contact Karen Thomas, Director, for further information or to arrange an audition.

Rehearsals: Weekly on Thursdays from 7:30-9:30 pm in the Chapel.

Rhythm of Being

All adults are invited to a move-as-you-are-able dance. Wear clothes that feel good to groove and move in! Allow yourself to move as you are able and inspired, which could mean tapping your toe or sitting in a chair and breathing. The music will begin promptly at 7:00. Feel free to be there the whole time, arrive late, or leave early as you desire. (If you arrive late, please come in quietly and take your shoes off as not to interrupt the flow.) Childcare is available if reserved in advance.

Meetings: Weekly on Wednesdays from 7-9 pm in Nathan Johnson Hall.

Leader: Joplin Vaughan
