As we prepare to welcome a new minister, we’re invited to reflect on who we are and imagine who we might become. All are welcome to join us in Nathan Johnson Hall for this time of reflection, conversation, and community. Lunch will be provided, and participants are invited to bring a dish to share if they wish. The workshop will be facilitated by Reverend Eric Kaminetzky, the Interim Settled Ministries Director for the UUA, in collaboration with the UUC Ministerial Search Team.

Join us for this meaningful time together as we open our hearts and minds to the possibilities ahead. Please register here to to help us plan for lunch and materials

Ministerial Search Team Update: Summer 2025

At our Annual Meeting in June, the UUC Congregation elected a seven-person team to conduct the search for our new minister. Your Ministerial Search Team had their first meeting on July 12 (see photo above) and we will spend more time over the summer getting to know one another. We will have our first official retreat in early September.

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) offers deep resources to help with this process, including a time-line that all congregational search teams follow (see below), ongoing procedural support, best practices ideas and document templates we can use as starting points for our own work.

In September and October, the Ministerial Search Team will begin listening to and learning from the congregation about our collective priorities in this ministerial search. This will include asking folks to complete a congregational survey and scheduling many opportunities to share thoughts/dreams/hopes for our shared future. The Search Team will also be scheduling a congregational workshop in late fall/early winter to help everyone be best prepared to welcome a new senior minister. You’ll be hearing more about all of these in the new church year.

The Search Team will be updating you throughout this process in the
Gateway enewsletter and here on the church's website. And when you see Search Team members around church, don’t hesitate to ask questions, provide encouragement and/or offer suggestions. You can also email us at MinisterialSearch@UUChurch.org.

Hired Acting Associate Minister

May 2025

We are excited to share some wonderful news with you! The Acting Associate Search Team has concluded its efforts, and we are thrilled to introduce Rev. Victoria Poling as our new Acting Associate Minister for Community Engagement.

The position is part of our new staff team that emphasizes working with congregational teams to share the ministry of several essential areas including welcome, caring community and social justice. We will be very collaborative within the staff, as well as with lay leaders to continue to expand leadership development and build partnerships within the congregation and beyond. The associate position is acting, which indicates in this instance that it will likely remain in place as we transition into the new lead ministry and will allow the lead minister to have flexibility to continue the current ministry or seek another associate in line with their vision to build a vibrant and effective shared ministry.

Transition Team Members

Mission of the Interim Ministry Transition Team

The Transition Team is a diverse group of UUC members that provides support to our interim minister, Reverend Doug Wadkins. It serves as an advisory group, information conduit and sounding board to the congregation and lay leaders as we all discern and respond to emerging questions and considerations that arise for UUC now and in the coming years.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the purpose of Interim Ministry during the two-year transition time?

The two-year interim transition period provides the breathing space during which our congregation can review its goals, assess its programs, consider the quality of its life in common, and “tune up” for a new era. It allows our congregation to grow into and own its new identity, independent of both positive and negative feelings about the previous ministry and operational practices. The transition time can be exciting, even transformative, when devoted to self-examination and community renewal.

  • What do members of the congregation do during the transition time?

The interim period focuses our congregation within—to realize that our resilience transcends individual leaders. The first year of transition includes discernment, conversations, curiosity and self-awareness about our current and future states as individuals and as a beloved faith community. For example, grief can arise with change and can simmer or surface at different points during the transition time. Listening to what this grief has to teach us and our community is a part of the congregational work during the transition time. The second year of transition evolves through a process of renewal and innovation in the spirit of joy and growth as we build our bright future together and prepare for our permanent settled minister.

  • What can the congregation do to support the work of the transition team and the interim minister?

Openness and readiness greatly impact how our interim minister, staff, lay leadership, volunteers and church members work together. Telling stories of important experiences in the life of the church is a part of finding what makes our community unique. In addition to the inward facing work, the transition time also focuses our congregation outward—to thoughtfully discern what the world asks of us now and in the coming years.

  • Who is the Interim Minister?

Reverend Doug Wadkins is a specially trained and accredited UUA clergy member with extensive experience serving congregations as an interim minister. He was selected by a congregational search committee and hired by the Board to fulfill the pastoral, institutional, operational, and special organizational needs of the church during the two-year transition time.

  • Why do we have an interim minister? Can Reverend Doug become our “permanent” minister?

An interim minister is not eligible for candidacy as the called minister in the church where they serve as interim. Reverend Doug assists the congregation in moving beyond its last ministry and equipping itself for a new, different ministry. Because interim ministers are intentionally temporary, they are well-positioned to shine light on difficult truths and to effect changes that help move a congregation toward greater health, readying them for a new ministry.

  • Why might interim ministerial transitions include other staff changes?

A congregation is a system of interconnected programs and relationships and one change may lead to others. During the interim period, it’s very common for a variety of leadership transitions to take place as people respond to changes in the system. Sometimes staff ultimately decide that the time is right for them to move on. Staff and longtime active lay leaders may decide to step back or shift roles, while others step up as they see new leadership opportunities emerge.

  • How might anti-racism, anti-oppression and social justice activities intersect with interim ministries?

Discernment about matters of equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice is a natural fit with interim work – because it is part of the process of self-reflection and renewal. UUC’s unique history and culture, combined with the gifts and personalities of our congregants and staff, result in doing things a certain way and how our church operates. The transition period is a good time to question: Who in our community feels a true sense of belonging? Whose voices are heard? How might formal policies and processes, coupled with informal patterns, favor some individuals or identities over others? This is a time to openly explore norms, assumptions, and unconscious biases and to forge a pathway forward that welcomes all into our beloved community and allows us to live into our values.

  • How does the Interim Ministry Transition Team help with the Interim process?

The Transition Team and Reverend Doug meet at least monthly to reflect on a range of congregational topics that emerge during the transition period. The Team provides a conduit for suggestions, concerns and feedback from the congregation at large. It also helps determine priorities and focus for transitional work and advises on how best to facilitate communication and transparency. The Transition Team engages the congregation to educate, answer questions, and correct misinformation regarding interim ministry. At the end of the transition time, the team facilitates the creation of a “good goodbye” for the interim minister and assists in planning a welcome for our new minister.

  • What is the difference between the Interim Ministry Transition Team and the Ministerial Search Committee?

UUC’s Interim Ministry Transition Team is not directly involved with the work of the UUC Ministerial Search Committee – other than to assist as needed or requested with communication and information exchange. See the Ministerial Search section of this page for more information.
