UUC’s chapter of Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East (UUJME) invites you to join us this fall in reading and discussing A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy, the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Nathan Thrall. The book chronicles the story of a Palestinian father navigating a complex system of Israeli military checkpoints, barrier walls, and bureaucratic obstacles in a frantic effort to locate his son in the wake of a tragic bus crash.

The reading circle will begin on Friday, September 4. We will meet every other Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., ending on November 13. 

UUJME is a national organization founded in 1971 which supports a just peace in Israel-Palestine, including an end to the illegal occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza. UUC’s chapter is chaired by Emily Joseph and Walter Hatch.

Each circle will be small, allowing us to listen deeply to one another. We will stay connected through an agreed-upon covenant, sharing our experiences as we read and wondering how we will respond individually and together after undergoing these moments of personal and collective reflection. We will focus on the book—not on larger, political debates about Israel and Palestine.

Emily Joseph has a small supply of discounted books for $7 each. The Seattle Public Library has several copies of the book available for checkout, as well as ebooks through Libby. You can also find copies at Third Place Books. If you are unable to access the book for financial reasons, please contact the church office.
