New Art Coming to Back of Chapel
Sunday, March 29
A new piece of art will be premiering above the candle table in the back of our chapel this coming Sunday. As you live with it for the next while, form your impressions and opinions slowly as you experience the art at various times of day and through events in your personal and public lives.
More words from Rev. Doug:
- Sharing Our Space is Important: How we use and decide on our UUC spaces, especially the Chapel, is a big part of being a spiritual community. It's a practice in patience and good will.
- The Chapel is Key: So much happens here: worship, life milestones, meetings, and personal reflection. It's where the heart of our spiritual life beats.
- Art is Coming to the Candle Corner: We've been looking for art for the candle corner in the back of the chapel—that spot for memory, reflection, and where our care team meets people.
- Generous Donor + Local Artist: A wonderful donor is giving us a piece by Joyce Gehl, a fellow UUC artist from Orcas Island.
- What We Hope the Art Will Do: We think the art will help people with their reflections and processing all kinds of feelings—sorrow, joy, and remembrance.
- Art and Community Go Together: Bringing in new art reminds us:
- Beauty is super subjective (we all see it differently!).
- Aesthetics really help us deepen our spiritual lives.
- Our feelings about art can change over time.
- The most important thing is how we make decisions about it—with care, patience, respect, and "liberating love."
- Take Your Time: We're asking everyone to think about the piece over time, keeping the chapel's function in mind, and reflecting on how it affects our community's journey.
- The Process Matters: While the art itself is important, how we navigate this together—centered on our values and mutual respect—is what truly counts.
Excited to see what we discover together!
