Sunday May 17, 10:30–11:15 a.m. information session in Knatvold
UUC's Faith Land Initiative (FLI) team welcomes your questions and suggestions at an information session May 17 between services in the Knatvold room.
Faith Land Initiative is a Church Council of Greater Seattle program that supports faith communities to practice discernment about how to share our assets, centering transforming values like abundance and transparency.
Beginning last October UUC's FLI Team embarked upon a three-pronged discernment process:
- Congregant meetings to consider values and hopes for sharing our space
- Research meetings with churches and community organizations
- Identify potential criteria, centering our mission, vision, values, principles.
The desired outcome of this work is to intentionally and mindfully open our church space to serve the community, and to develop and sustain a process for accepting space-use requests that is values-based, mission-centered and mindful of the history and legacy of exclusionary land use laws and practices on our community.
The areas of action already underway support deepening our existing relationships with community serving groups, centering our values.
A group is working in partnership with
Eckstein Middle School (our closest neighboring school) to provide space to hold donated dry goods for families who need material support (diapers, detergent, etc.) and provide a monthly pick-up day for families.
UUC volunteers are also working to deepen our partnership with Teen Feed beyond current meal team support by collaborating to install garden planters and grow produce for Teen Feed use.
Future Areas of Action may include deepening our partnership with
Lake City Partners Ending Homelessness beyond current support to investigate becoming a severe weather site to offer shelter during heat waves or cold waves. UUC volunteers are also in dialogue about supporting emerging needs from
Pink Haven.
If you would like to learn more, volunteer or have a new idea for serving the community with our space, join us on May 17 in Knatvold between services or stop by our Learning Station on May 10 during coffee hour.
