Sunday, May 17, 12:30–1:30 p.m. in Channing
Do you love gardening and want to collaborate with others to create a community-serving garden at UUC?
If so, please join a group that is meeting on Sunday to discuss the proposal to collaborate with Teen Feed volunteers and clients to place garden containers in the southeast corner of the UUC yard, with harvested produce going to support Teen Feed meal teams. The goal of the meeting is to develop an incremental plan to submit to UUC staff for review and approval.
Ideas that have been raised so far include a pizza garden (basil, oregano, cherry tomatoes, peppers, garlic...) an aromatic herb garden (lavender, rosemary, thyme, catnip, parsley, mint in a pot...) and maybe other edibles like carrots, strawberries, arugula, broccoli...), and perhaps even adding a carpenter bee board installed along the back fence.
Next steps identified by the existing team of volunteers were:
- Investigate planter options
- Draft a letter soliciting donations of plant starts
- Develop a phased plan of execution:
- Identify a location to relocate existing shrubs from beds, and transplant
- Prepare and level site
- Chip drop - order, receive, spread chips
- Gather plant starts
- Place containers on site and fill with soil
- Planting day
- Make identification labels for plants
- Establish a maintenance plan for watering and upkeep
- Harvest party and/or schedule (maybe coinciding with UUC meal team dates for produce drop-offs)
- Celebrate and plan for next season
If you are interested in working on this proposal or learning more, please attend the meeting next Sunday. If you are interested but can’t attend, please email Patricia Graesser at patcsygraesser@comcast.net.
