A Gift of Art Is Coming to the Candle Corner

We are excited to share that the chapel’s candle corner—that spot for memory, reflection, and caring for one another—will now also host a piece of art. A wonderful donor has gifted us a painting by Joyce Gehl, a fellow UU and artist from Orcas Island. It will be on display starting this coming Sunday, March 29.

Since art is subjective, and the chapel is central to our community, I’d like to offer a few thoughts.

So much happens in the chapel: worship, life milestones, meetings, and contemplation. It’s where the heart of our spiritual life beats. We hope this artwork will support people in these moments and as they process all kinds of feelings—sorrow, joy, remembrance.

How we make choices about our shared spaces is a big part of being a spiritual community. It’s a practice in patience and goodwill. I invite you to spend time with the painting, keeping the chapel’s function in mind, and reflect on how it affects our shared journey.

Art and community go together. Bringing in new art can remind us that:

  • beauty is subjective,
  • aesthetics help us deepen our spiritual lives, and
  • our feelings about art can evolve.

While the art itself is important, how we explore this—with care, respect, and love—is what truly counts. My thanks to our generous donors and to each of you for approaching this addition with an open heart.

Excited to see what we discover together!
