Advance Directives and Choosing a Healthcare Representative

Wednesday, May 27, 5-7 p.m. in the Knatvold room or via Zoom; by registration

Creating advance directives and choosing a healthcare representative are two essentials in order to ensure the type of critical medical care you want. Many people delay thinking about critical end of life care until it is too late. Once intervention begins, it is usually difficult to stop. And if it does not begin in time, critical intervention may be ineffective. Therefore, you must think through and record specifics about the type of care that will best meet your goals. Unfortunately, many advance directives are flawed. This workshop, sponsored by UUC's Care Team, will help you create one that can work.

But even flawless directives are useless unless someone speaks for you when you cannot express yourself. That someone is your healthcare representative, your surrogate. Few people carefully consider the skills that successful representation requires. In this workshop, you will learn what is required so that you can decide on the right person for you. Time permitting, you and your representative will be helped to be sure that you understand, and can support each other’s choices. Therefore, if possible, please attend with the person chosen to speak for you.

Registration is required for this class. All registrants have the option of requesting a ride to this class or volunteering to give someone a ride to this class. Note that a Zoom option is also available.

The presenter is Richard Stuart (Shoreline UU), a psychologist who has spent years learning how to help people get the critical care they desire. He is a psychologist on the Medical Staff of Swedish/Edmonds Hospital and Professor Emeritus (Psychiatry) University of Washington.

N95 masks must be worn by everyone who attends this class in-person, and will be provided by UUC.
