New England Pilgrimage 2023

Rev. Jon Luopa will lead a pilgrimage to sites of Unitarian and Universalist historic significance in the Greater Boston area again this fall from October 3–9. There is still space (two hotel rooms) if you would like to join this group of fourteen UUC pilgrims. Please let Jon know at your earliest convenience (at jon.luopa@uuchurch.org) if you would like to join us.

Details

We will gather at our hotel in Cambridge the evening of October 3. The next day we will visit the chapel of the Harvard Divinity School to read portions of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s 1838 Divinity School Address in the space he offered it then. The afternoon will feature a tour of Mt. Auburn Cemetery, the first garden cemetery in the US, where we will visit the graves of famous Unitarian and Universalist leaders. Jon will offer commentary at each gravesite.

Thursday will be spent in Concord, MA, where we will visit the homes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, and Henry David Thoreau. Lunch at the Colonial Inn before heading over to Walden Pond and the Thoreau cabin site where we will read brief sections of Walden. It has been warm enough on previous trips to take a swim in Walden Pond for those hardy of spirit.

The next day we travel out to Harvard, MA, to visit the Fruitlands Museum. This is the site of one of the 19th century Unitarian communes, founded by Bronson Alcott, and caricatured later by his daughter Louisa who sent part of her youth there.

We will spend Saturday in Boston, visiting many sites on Beacon Hill, King’s Chapel, former Unitarian and Universalist headquarters, the Old Corner Bookshop, Faneuil Hall, lunch at Quincy Market, and dinner in Boston’s famous North End (Italian!).

We will attend the 11 a.m. service at the Arlington Street Church, Boston Common, on Sunday. One of our great, historic churches, once the pulpit of the Rev. Dr. William Ellery Channing, spiritual founder of American Unitarianism, still survives. The pilgrimage ends on Sunday afternoon. Some travelers will leave for home then or on Monday.

Good walking shoes are essential! We will rent audio devices so that all of us can hear as we move about.

Cost

In addition to airfare, the average cost for the trip will be around $900 (shared room) or $1900 (single room). This price includes rental of the van and audio phones, plus admission to some sites.
