Everyone is welcome to come discuss “cancel culture”, what it is, and whether it even exists. How does it differ from leftwing to rightwing spaces? What have you seen yourself? Opinions vary, so we will have plenty of opportunity to learn from each other as we engage in mutually respectful dialogue on this timely but touchy topic.
In 2015, a Minnesota dentist went on a legal hunt in Zimbabwe and killed a lion known as Cecil. An online harassment campaign went viral, and at one point threats drove the dentist into hiding. The incident generated public outrage against trophy hunting as well as passenger airline bans on transporting trophies, and it prefigured the many “cancellation” campaigns that have taken place since. What sense should we make of these viral campaigns?
