This year World Water Day falls on March 22. The United Nations is encouraging people around the globe to be the change they want to see in the world and change the way we and our communities use, consume, and manage water. 1 Here in the Pacific Northwest, river and riparian areas critical to native plant and animal survival will be stressed by rising stream temperatures and lower summer stream flow… 2  These waterways are critical for salmon survival and need our help.

UUC’s Climate Action Team and Art Committee invite individuals and families to participate in a morning of volunteer action to honor this day and the critical importance of water to life on our planet. Please join us to help the Mid-Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group restore habitat along two local rivers:

  • Saturday, March 25, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. along the Green-Duwamish River in Fenster Nature Park, Auburn
  • Saturday, April 1, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. on the West Sammamish River Trail in Woodinville.

Please RSVP by emailing ClimateActionUUC@gmail.com. Include your full name, date you want to attend, email, ZIP Code, and if you need or can offer a ride. (We will do our best to connect people with rides, but no guarantees.) Community service hours are available to participating youth.

Activities may include removing invasive plants, mulching, and planting trees and shrubs to provide shade to the stream. Dress for the weather, bring work gloves and a water bottle (and lunch if desired.) All other supplies and equipment will be provided.

The events are organized by the Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group along with other local organizations. Their mission is to engage people in on-the-ground efforts to enhance local stream and near-shore habitat, so local salmon and communities can thrive.
