Next Steps for Tent City 3: Want to get involved?

Now that UUC has decided to host Tent City 3 (TC3) this spring, the church team behind this effort is welcoming new members—or just occasional volunteers who want to be more involved. We don’t yet know exactly what roles need to be filled, but do know that we will have additional work to complete in the next two plus months before TC3 moves to UUC, and then again during its operation at the church (mid-March to mid-June).

Tent City 3 is a temporary tent shelter community operated by SHARE (Seattle Housing and Resource Effort) and WHEEL (Women’s Housing, Equality and Enhancement League) that is sanctioned and partially funded by the City of Seattle. TC3 fills a need for temporary safe shelter for individuals, couples and families who cannot find affordable housing. The community moves every three months between different religious and educational institutions.

Unlike random encampments, TC3 is an intentional, self-governed community that makes and enforces its own rules.

In November, church members overwhelmingly supported a proposal to host TC3 at the south end of our parking lot. Church leaders subsequently negotiated an agreement to carry out this plan.
