Saturday, March 11, 2 p.m. in the UUC Chapel or Livestream

There will be a Celebration of Life for Cal Van Zee in the UUC chapel on Saturday, March 11. The Rev. Jon Luopa and the Rev. Beth Chronister will officiate.

UUC members and friends are invited to join Cal’s family for the service in the Chapel or via Livestream. A reception in Nathan Johnson Hall will immediately follow.

After living three full and fulfilling years with advanced prostate cancer, Cal Van Zee died on January 14, his mother’s birthday. Cal was surrounded by his wife, Judith Wood, and their three children during a short stay at Ballard Hospital. Following a beautiful ceremony officiated by Rev. Beth Chronister at Recompose, Cal’s body is on its way to becoming a tree.

Cal became a member of UUC in 1996. He was active in many groups, events and activities at the church, including the Juvenile (In)Justice Team fighting to stop construction of a youth jail in Seattle, the Racial Justice Team, UU the Vote, the Board of Trustees, and Finance Committee. Cal was particularly passionate about UUC’s New England Pilgrimage, and took a lead role in promoting and helping to organize its several trips.

Cal requested that anyone wishing to honor his memory contribute to Team Child or the Economic Opportunity Institute.

  1. Mandy Varona says:

Cal was committed to stopping the building of the juvenile jail, and if King County had listened, it would have positively redirected many young lives and saved taxpayers a couple hundred million dollars.
