September’s Dedicated Plate to Benefit Teen Feed

For nearly 20 years, UUC has partnered with Teen Feed, a non-profit that provides services, support and meals to homeless teens. Through nightly meals and street outreach, Teen Feed fosters trusting relationships with youth, and then offers support and resources that enable them to establish a plan to stabilize their lives. The Second Sunday Plate Collection this month supports UUC’s work with Teen Feed.

Our UUC Meal Team is an intergenerational crew, spanning three generations and six decades—currently, there are about 30 engaged from our congregation. Over Labor Day weekend, UUC teams will prepare meals on both Friday and Sunday nights. Your generosity on September 11 will cover expenses for groceries and kitchen supplies for the 18 meals that UUC hosts. This year, UUC’s team will prepare nearly 1,000 meals, including seconds or thirds for many teens and to-go meals served at the Roots Shelter.

Teen Feed has pivoted throughout COVID, adapting protocols as advised by King County Public Health, and continuing their work to connect and serve up nightly meals throughout. Our UUC Meal Team has continued as well, with a small, on-site team of 4–5 preparing an entree and side dishes. Often, 4–6 more families prepare items from their home kitchen, like packets of chocolate chip cookies, pans of Spanish rice or roasted veggies. Then UUC’s crew serves teens onsite at one of the University-District churches that shares its kitchen and dining space. Additionally, about 30 to-go boxed meals are assembled, and delivered to the Roots Youth Shelter in the U-District.

These meals, prepared nightly, by teams from congregations like ours, create an opportunity for Teen Feed advocates to meet with teens individually. This allows the advocates to build rapport with the teens and connect them to resources. Teen Feed’s outreach has become ever more critical in the last few years, with teens finding it more challenging to gather in some public spaces than before.
