Second Sunday Plate to La Resistencia
Sunday, March 13, both services (9:30 and 11:15 a.m.)
This month’s second Sunday plate collection will support the work of La Resistencia. A grassroots volunteer organization led by undocumented immigrants, La Resistencia is committed to ending the unjust detention and deportations of immigrants. Following the leadership of those detained at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma—one of the largest privately run prisons in the U.S.—La Resistencia continues to call for basic health and human rights for those detained, to shut down this privately owned detention center, and, as part of a broader national movement, end immigration detention.
For nearly four decades, UUC’s immigrant justice efforts have focused on support of those who are undocumented, seeking asylum in this country, or detained at the NWDC. UUC has showed up in solidarity at the detention center, supported those seeking sanctuary and advocated for the closure of the NWDC. With La Resistencia’s organizing, joined by partner organizations and many from our church community, a new state law was passed that will bring an end to private for-profit prisons, like the NWDC, in 2025.
The work of La Resistencia is aligned with our UU principles and values around justice, compassion and dignity for all. La Resistencia’s goal of the collective liberation of all exemplifies our faith in action. Please join in supporting their work to uphold the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
