Message from Jon

Rev. Jon M. Luopa

Unitarian Universalist organizations led by People of Color have endorsed the proposed 8th UU Principle. They have asked individual UU congregations to adopt it as a way of demonstrating a commitment to anti-racism.

ON JANUARY 30 UUC MEMBERS WILL BE ASKED TO ADOPT THE PROPOSED 8th UU PRINCIPLE AS WRITTEN.

The current focus on the 8th Principle comes at a time when the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is scheduled to review all the Principles of the UUA. The Principles are found in Article II of the UUA Bylaws. In 2020, an Article II Study Commission (A2SC) was established by the UUA to engage in that review and to consider adding an 8th Principle to the existing seven Principles.

A proposal from the A2SC will come before the UU General Assembly in June 2023. What will follow is a year of vigorous discussion and debate about the proposed language for our Principles. A final vote on the wording will take place at the General Assembly in June 2024.

The appropriate time to engage in revising the language of the 8th Principle, and for any revised language of the existing seven Principles, will be between June 2023 and June 2024. However, the A2SC has made available an opportunity for you to begin sharing feedback right now!  Please go to https://www.uua.org/uuagovernance/committees/article-ii-study-commission to share your thoughts. Thank you.
