UUC Zen Groups Online For Now

Until further notice, UUC’s Tuesday & Friday morning Zen Meditation & Study groups will meet online only, via Zoom. This is in response to heightened concerns related to COVID-19 and preferences of participants around indoor-masking requirements currently in effect for onsite groups at UUC.

The group will continue its usual practice of sharing brief opening and closing chants, spoken dedication to recall those held in compassion, two periods of silent meditation, and opportunity for private meetings with a Zen teacher on most days. Following a short break after the first hour, the group greets one another and engages the current book discussion. A shared reading practice during the meeting gives the teaching of the day, and shared reflections follow.

The group has been enjoying the poetic essays of Zenju Earthlyn Manuel, in her 2020 book The Deepest Peace: Contemplations from a Season of Stillness. Starting Tuesday 9/7, the group will begin Ordinary Wonder: Zen Life and Practice, by Charlotte Joko Beck (2021). Both books are on order at the UUC Bookstore and widely available from commercial outlets.

UUC also offers online Zen meditation opportunities on Monday evenings (7-8 pm) and early mornings Tuesday through Sunday (6:30-7:00 am). All are open to drop-ins. No experience is necessary, although you are encouraged contact the practice leaders if you are not familiar with the silent sitting style used in Zen.
