Obituary for Robert (Bob) von Tobel

Robert von Tobel found love late in life and was at peace with himself when he died in his sleep on the evening of May 13, 2021.

Bob was born on July 22, 1927 in Portland, Oregon and grew up in Wapato, Washington. He graduated from high school in 1945 and joined the Army Air Corps, where he served both in Europe and in Guam. After his discharge from the Air Corps in 1947, he went to the University of Washington on the GI bill, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Bob worked at Boeing for his entire professional life, and the software he created was used by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. His job involved quite a bit of travel, often to Sweden.

Bob had three children; a daughter who has been hospitalized her entire adult life, a son, Carl and a daughter, Elisabeth who both predeceased him.

He was very active in the Unitarian Church, both in the University (Seattle) and East Shore (Bellevue) locations. Per his request, his ashes will be interred in the East Shore Unitarian Church Memorial Garden in a private ceremony.

Bob was an ardent supporter of the performing arts. He also loved to drive, and could always be counted on to ferry people to and from the airport. He was tall, quiet and conflict adverse and his gentle presence will be missed by all who knew him.
