David Whyte, Pacific Northwest Poet

In his January 3 sermon, “A Gate Unfastened,” the Rev. Jon Luopa cited the work of acclaimed poet David Whyte, who lives on Whidbey Island. Jon’s sermon was inspired in part by an excerpt from one of Whyte’s poems which was included in The Heart Aroused: Poetry and Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America (1994). Several attending the Zoom gathering for worship that Sunday have asked for more information on the poem itself. Jon has advised that the source poem, “Yorkshire,” may be found in its entirety in Whyte’s books River Flow: New & Selected Poems, Revised (2012) and The House of Belonging (1996).
UUC members and friends who are familiar with Whyte’s work are aware that he occasionally offers local poetry readings and workshops on broader topics. His website notes that such an opportunity is upcoming online this month – click here to find more information.
