Cowlitz County Ends ICE Contract

Last May and June, UUC members called on Cowlitz County officials to urge them to release youth being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in their juvenile detention center. This was part of a Community Action Circle let by UUC’s Immigrant Justice Team in which participants took actions related to Covid relief, immigration detention, and standing in solidarity with agricultural workers.

Last weekend, an ACLU employee, citing the impact of community pressure, shared an exciting message with the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network mailing list: Cowlitz County is ending its contract with ICE! Though we have a long way to go to eliminate youth and immigration detention in Washington state, it is important to celebrate victories along the way, and to take a moment to recognize the impact of grassroots community action.
