2020 Census and Social-Economic Justice
The Economic Justice Team urges UUC members and friends to respond to the 2020 Census, if you haven’t already done so. Then, please reach out and remind 5 other people. The Census Bureau had plans for extensive outreach, but they have been changed and delayed because of the Covid pandemic. It’s not too late!
Why is this important for social and economic justice? Population counts from the census are used to allocate billions of dollars in federal funding for social programs. Since people of color, immigrants, members of Native American tribes, young children, and rural residents are typically undercounted, our state risks losing funds to support these very groups if they are not fully counted. The census also determines how many members of Congress each state will have for the next 10 years.
People can respond to the census online or by phone (in many different languages). For more information, go to https://2020census.gov/en/ways-to-respond. Help get everyone counted!
