Volunteer Help Needed for UCEF
Are you feeling discouraged that despite all that we know, homelessness continues to spiral out of control? Preventing homelessness from happening in the first place seems to be the most effective answer to me. And to help people stay in their homes, I’ve been volunteering for the United Churches Emergency Fund (UCEF) for many years, mainly as a board member. It is so rewarding to see how much a little extra money and resources can help people by preventing eviction and paying utility bills.
UCEF was founded in 1986 by several churches in the University district in response to a growing demand for individual requests of assistance. UUC was involved at the beginning and continues to provide support through our Easter offering and through members volunteering. Volunteers at the UCEF office at the University Congregational UCC on NE 45th Street (4515 16th Ave NE) provide compassionate listening, focused referrals, and financial assistance to prevent homelessness.
Board Members: We need members on our board of directors to visualize our future. UCEF’s Oversight Board is made up of enthusiastic supporters of the organization and its mission, who are committed to helping UCEF continue as a strong support in our community. Members are drawn from the community and from member churches, and bring a variety of skills and interests. The board meets at 3 p.m. on the third Thursday of every other month. Next meeting is November 21.
Web Page: We need help with our web page; this can be done from home.
Office volunteers: We need people who like working with those in need two or more mornings a month: Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
Donation drive: Would you like to help UCEF but don’t have the daytime availability to volunteer on a regular basis? Consider hosting a donation drive. They’re a great activity to do with a church school class or other small group, or wherever you’re spending time with a generous group of folks in your life. Snack packs, hygiene kits, and of course money, are currently needed.
