UUC’s Teen Feed Meal Team

UUC has partnered with Teen Feed for nearly 15 years. UUC’s Meal Team includes an intergenerational crew of 28, preparing and serving 18 meals per year–either on the 1st Sunday or the 1st Friday each month.

Earlier this month, while many were celebrating with family and friends over the last extended holiday weekend of the summer, two UUC meal teams prepared and served chicken, salad, plenty of veggies, and lots of other nutritious eats for about 50 teens. These Teen Feed meals, coordinated every night of the year by teams from churches like UUC–plus teams from community organizations and businesses–create an opportunity for Teen Feed advocates to establish rapport with these teens and help them move toward their goals: to finish earn a high school diploma, enroll in college, land a job or locate housing. Teen Feed has helped over 60 teens find more stable housing so far this year.

Teen Feed’s goal is to prevent long-term homelessness. This goal can seem daunting, but the number of homeless teens in King County this year did actually decrease, when compared to both 2018 and 2017. With some of the recent news coverage, these small successes get lost. UUC’s Teen Feed Meal Team is fortunate to hear some success stories. Here are a few links that may help you deepen your knowledge of homelessness, too.

  • Washington state has found a way to work around the federal rules and definitions to serve more homeless students: read this week’s Seattle Times story
  • Charlotte Sanders, of the University of Washington’s School of Social Work, developed a course on homelessness. Read about what led her to develop this course.
  • Engage in a community dialogue about homelessness at Mirror Stage in October. Mirror Stage identifies a topic of community interest, commissions the development of a short play, and then brings that to the community to launch community discussion. UW’s Charlotte Sanders will lead two free pre-show lectures. Details on the Mirror Stage website. Performances October 5, 6, 12 and 13.
