UUC Calling for Closure of the NWDC

Flowers and signs at the Northwest Detention Center fence

University Unitarian Church has joined over 150 organizations in Washington state in calling for closure of theNorthwest Detention Center (NWDC), an immigrant detention center in Tacoma, WA run by the for-profit company, GEO group. This grassroots campaign, organized by the immigrant-led group, La Resistencia, calls for the shutdown of the NWDC and the release of all people caged there. This local effort is part of a nationwide movement to end immigrant detention across the US.

The Immigrant Justice Team and Racial Justice Team at UUC discerned together whether to take a position as a congregation to endorse this campaign. The groups discussed the impact of immigrant detention on families and communities, the exponential increase in imprisoning immigrants over the past 30 years, the racism inherent to the larger system of mass incarceration, and imagined a future without detention. A number of our partner organizations including Casa LatinaWAISN, and NWIRP were among the first to sign-on. The two justice teams decided to add University Unitarian Church to the list in solidarity with immigrant families and our partner organizations.

The UUC Immigrant Justice Team will offer gathering space after the holidays for people to learn more and bring their questions.
