For 15 years, UUC has partnered with Teen Feed, a non-profit that provides services, support and meals to homeless teens. Through nightly meals and street outreach, Teen Feed attempts to foster trusting relationships with youth, and then offers support and resources that enable them to establish a plan. October’s Social Justice Plate Collection will support the work of UUC’s Meal Team.

Our meal team plans, prepares and serves 18 Teen Feed meals each year. That work, coordinated 365 nights of the year by teams from congregations like ours, plus community organizations and co-workers, creates an opportunity for Teen Feed staff and volunteer advocates to build rapport with these teens, fostering a relationship of trust. From trust, teens open themselves up to conversations about hope, goals and dreams that might include earning a GED, landing a job, securing a highly sought-after spot with a transitional housing program, or re-connecting with family. Goals, determined by each teen, with the support of a case manager, can provide a pathway out of homelessness.

Our UUC Meal Team is an intergenerational crew of 28, spanning three generations and five decades. Last Sunday, 13 from UUC, served up spaghetti, roasted veggies, salad, garlic bread, chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. For some, this was the only real meal of the day, sitting down with hot food and warm smiles…and opportunities for seconds, thirds and even fourths.

Knowing more about Teen Feed is key to understanding how hot meals lead to moving kids off the streets. So, some facts about Teen Feed:

  • Offers over 20,000 nutritious meals to hungry youth every year
  • Connects with over 900 individual youth in need
  • Provides one-on-one support coordination for 400 youth, providing a mailing address and help with a state identification, employment, healthcare enrollment, housing, and more.

Teen Feed’s goal—prevent long-term homelessness. The motto linked to this goal: “A Full Belly & Trust.” Your generosity on October 13 will cover expenses for groceries and kitchen supplies for the 18 meals that UUC hosts. That translates into about 800 meals served by UUC’s Meal Team. Help UUC contribute toward full bellies that create pathways towards trust, stability and a life without homelessness.

If you will not be at the Sunday service on October 13, you can contribute online. (Select “Special Plate Collection” from the drop-down menu and enter “October Plate for Teen Feed” in the memo line.)
