Food Bank for Immigrants
UUC’s Immigrant Justice Team, and six other congregations from the U-District Immigrant Justice Hub, are collecting food donations for immigrant families experiencing food insecurity. The Alternative Food Bank Project connects families who are currently experiencing food insecurity, related to concerns of those who are undocumented accessing some community food banks, or due to the detention of a family member and the financial hardship this often adds.
An aggressive ICE deportation campaign has left many immigrant families vulnerable and wary of reaching out to government-funded food banks and resource centers — the Alternative Food Bank Project was established to help fill this void. The project involves partners throughout the Puget Sound coordinating donation drop-off sites. Congregation Beth Shalom will serve as the drop-off site for donations for all the U-District Hub congregations for October.
The greatest need in the Puget Sound right now is in south King County and Pierce County — but, the U-District Hub is making it easy for you to offer your support to impacted families. You can donate food or Safeway gift cards, whichever is easier, during the last half of October.
Drop-off your donations at the office of Congregation Beth Shalom, 6800 35th Ave NE, on the following dates –
- Wednesday – Friday, October 16-18 and October 23-25
- Monday – Tuesday, October 28-29
Their office hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. & Friday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

You’ll find a list of staples that the families prefer, like brown rice, whole grain pasta, canned fruits, and bread. Or, buy Safeway gift cards in the amount of $20 (or buy several, if you like), so families can buy fresh fruits, vegetables and other basics that are perishable.
