The Green Sanctuary program is a national initiative that encourages Unitarian Universalist congregations to assess their environmental impact and take positive steps to make their churches and congregational practices more sustainable – more "green."
It was our inspiring youth group that energized UUC with the Green Sanctuary program in 2005-06. Now, a committee of congregants is engaging us all to deeply examine how we live in sustainable balance with the Earth - as households, as a community of people, and as a church institution. If we meet its standards, UU Ministry for Earth [1] will certify UUC as a Green Sanctuary. There are 59 UU congregations already certified as Green Sanctuaries, with another 50+ in the process.
The Green Sanctuary committee is currently working on an application for Green Sanctuary accreditation. The application involves an environmental audit and action plan of twelve activities and projects, as well as a communications plan. We hope to complete the accreditation process and become a certified Green Sanctuary by 2009.
We can use your help, ideas, enthusiasm, and love of the earth! To get involved, use our volunteer interest form [1], email Nancy Bowen-Pope [1] (or phone 425-821-7522), or attend one of our regular committee meetings, the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00PM. Please attend scent-free, if possible, since one of our members is chemically sensitive.
