About Green Sanctuary

The Green Sanctuary program is a national initiative that encourages Unitarian Universalist congregations to assess their environmental impact and take positive steps to make their churches and congregational practices more sustainable – more "green."

It was our inspiring youth group that energized UUC with the Green Sanctuary program in 2005-06. For the next three years, a committee of congregants took up this call, and engaged us to deeply examine how we live in sustainable balance with the Earth - as households, as a community of people, and as a church institution.

The Green Sanctuary application involved an environmental audit and action plan of twelve activities and projects. Our congregation completed all of the requirements (see below for descriptions of our various projects), and formally voted at our annual congregational meeting in June 2009 to become a Green Sanctuary. We were certified by the UUA in January 2010.
