One of UUC's strongest social justice legacies is in the area of affordable and supportive housing. In 1985, University Unitarian Church purchased and opened the first housing facility for AIDS patients in Seattle. The church also owns three other properties that house formerly homeless individuals. UUC has actively participated in two Habitat for Humanity builds, and we are gearing up for another. Learn more about opportunities below.
Habitat for Humanity
In 2005, UUC raised $42,000 and took the lead congregational role in an interfaith build in partnership with Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, and Jewish organizations. That house was dedicated and the keys turned over to a Vietnamese family in December, 2005. In June, 2006, we raised $20,000 for a second house at High Point in West Seattle. This was another interfaith build, led by University Congregational Church. The West Seattle house was dedicated in August, 2007.
Our Habitat for Humanity committee is now laying plans to participate in a third build in 2008, and is looking for volunteers to participate in planning and coordinating. We are pleased that our annual church auction event in November, An Evening in Tuscany, will raise funds for both UUC and Habitat for Humanity.
