Habitat for Humanity

[0] One of UUC's strongest social justice legacies is in the area of affordable and supportive housing. One aspect of this commitment has been an ongoing partnership with Habitat for Humanity [1].

Current Building Project

In October 2008 we proudly kicked off our third Habitat build, this one in partnership with the East Shore and Westside UU congregations. Located in the High Point neighborhood of West Seattle, it will become home to a single father from Somalia and his five children.

Volunteer opportunities are available on-site on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All on-site volunteers must take a brief orientation, which is available every third Thursday at 7:30PM at the Center for Spiritual Living [2].

To volunteer with the build or to find out about upcoming orientations at UUC, fill out the volunteer interest form [2], or contact Nick Barnard [2] or Xena Kinkade [2].

Thanks to a lead challenge gift from a generous UUC member, we are well on the way toward raising the $70,000 house sponsorship. Last year's church auction event raised an additional $8,000. A dedicated Second Sunday plate collection in September 2008 raised over $5,000 more, and our friends at East Shore Unitarian have raised over $11,000.  We continue to work with our partner congregations to raise funds.

UUC's History with Habitat for Humanity

In 2005, UUC raised $42,000 and took the lead congregational role in an interfaith build in partnership with Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, and Jewish organizations. That house was dedicated and the keys turned over to a Vietnamese family in December, 2005. In June, 2006, we raised $20,000 for a second house at High Point in West Seattle. This was another interfaith build, led by University Congregational Church. The West Seattle house was dedicated in August, 2007.
