Guide to Getting Involved at UUC

Like a menu with many choices, finding your way among UUC’s many programs and activities can be daunting. You can take advantage of most of UUC’s offerings even if you are not a member. For many, some involvement and direct experience is key to deciding about membership and whether this is the right community for you.

For more detailed information about our community and ways to get involved, we encourage you to use our UUC Program Guide. There are many resources and contacts identified in this guide to provide more information  for activities and volunteer opportunities available at UUC.

Simple First Steps

Learn about UUC through our website – you’re here! We have designed it with newcomers in mind. And we hope you find it inviting, easy to use, and full of clear, alluring information. For an overall sense of what is here, drag your cursor over the main navigation bar — in brown — on the top of each page. And take a look at our Get Involved page, which will take you to descriptions of our major programs, to an all-groups catalog, and to our calendar of all that is going on.

Attend Sunday services. Worship services are the centerpiece of UUC’s spiritual life, and a chance for members and visitors to connect. Greeters are on hand to make visitors and newcomers feel welcome and to answer questions. Stop at the greeters’ station when you arrive for a name badge and suggestions on how to find your way around.

Visit with us during the Sunday social hour. Before and after both services, we invite you to join us in Nathan Johnson Hall — just across from the chapel — for coffee, tea, treats, and conversation. One of the greeters (they're the ones with red ribbons) will help you join in and find your way around.

Read about UUC’s upcoming activities and developments in the weekly Sunday Order of ServiceThe Gateway (available weekly as an eNewsletter and monthly in print at the church), our website, and Facebook page.

Choosing the Involvement that Speaks to You

The clearer you are about what you need and want from your church experience, the more readily you will see opportunities at UUC.  Reflect on the following questions to help you choose:

  • What brings you to this church at this time? If you are looking for a place from which to explore your own spirituality, you might choose to focus on our worship services, or join a smaller Covenant Group or Meditation.  If you are looking for connections with like-minded people, you might get involved in meetings of one of the many small groups at UUC or in gatherings related to our Social Justice or Lifespan Religious Education programs.
  • What skills, strengths, or talents can you contribute in your involvement at UUC? If you are drawn to teaching or mentoring, you might consider volunteering in our Lifespan Religious Education classes for children, youth, and adults.  If you're an outgoing person with a desire to connect with many individuals, you could consider our Welcoming and Hospitality teams, such as the Greeters and Coffee Crew.
  • What ministry of the church do you want to help nurture? If you have the time and commitment to action that can help drive committees of individuals drawn to a facet of UUC's vision and ministries, you might be drawn to a program steering committee, a Social Justice group, or our Care Ministries or Memorial Reception teams, for example.

Through your own reflections and test-runs, may you find ways of being involved at UUC that “speak to you,” that make you feel connected, welcome, and appreciated for your contribution of time and talent.
