Local Author Lesley Hazelton previews her upcoming book on the Sunni and Shia Split

How did Muhammad, the prophet of unity -- one people, one God -- leave behind such a terrible legacy of division between Sunnis and Shia? This was the question that led Lesley Hazelton to an epic historical narrative known throughout the Middle East, where it is alive in many people's hearts as though it had happened just yesterday. Yet despite siz years of war in Iraq, where much of the story takes place, it is still all but unknown in the West. There is no way to understand today's headlines without this story of Islam's first civil war, Hazelton says, and without respecting its enormous depth and emotive power.

We are looking for all of UUC’s talented and creative people to come make this year’s All Church Talent Show a magical event!  In previous years we have had high and low brow
singers, dancers, performance artists, poetry slams, hot guitar riffs, inner divas, instrumentalists and more.  If you have performed in the past, we’re betting you’ll join us again.  If not, maybe this is the year for you!  The All Church Talent show is open to anyone who would like to participate.
It will be held Saturday, May 30th at 7:00 pm.  In order to take part in this you will need to sign up in person at the Talent Show table in Nathan Johnson Hall after services start.  Performance pieces must be 3 minutes or less.  This is a UUC event, so we’ll showcase everything from the sublime to the ridiculous (within reason ☺).
