King County Snapshots is a grant-funded, free, online database of historical images selected from twelve regional organizations. To see photographs of buildings designed by Paul Hayden Kirk, search “hayden kirk”. This search will retrieve numerous examples of his work, including private dwellings, which are not discussed in the essay.
On a site devoted to Modernist architecture, playfully named docomomo WEWA, you will find a biography of Kirk, as well as information on other architects, styles, and preservation. Docomomo WEWA stands for Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement in Western Washington. For Kirk’s biography, click here.
Another Kirk-designed building is the Magnolia Library. HistoryLink.org is an excellent general resource.
The Multi-Testbed site for the University of Washington, the University of Oregon Libraries, and Oregon State University’s digital image library provides astonishing access to gorgeous early photographs of the buildings featured in this essay. Unfortunately, as this is a test site, the interface is minimal and confusing if searches are unsuccessful. Do not expect search aids or assistance with this database.
