General Information

UUC's many-faceted religious education program for children and youth is a cooperative venture that involves our families, volunteers, and staff. To help ensure a safe, positive, and smoothly-operating environment, please become familiar with important general information that follows on these topics:

Schedules and Attendance

Church school begins the third Sunday in September and ends on the last Sunday in May.

  • Classes and care for infants and children through sixth grade generally meet during both the 9:30AM and 11:15AM Sunday services.
  • Classes for youth seventh through twelfth grade generally meet Sundays at 11:15AM.
  • See age-specific pages for more detail. Check for updated information when you register your child.

On summer Sundays (June through the second Sunday in September), we offer childcare for infants through preschoolers and an activity program for elementary school children during our 10:00AM Sunday service.

Church school classes are based on a rich Unitarian Universalist curriculum. Children who attend on a regular weekly basis will benefit most. Please let your child’s teacher know if your child will be away for an extended period due to illness or other reason.

Registration

New students may register at any time. Children who were registered at the end of the church school year will automatically move up to the next class in September. Church school programs are open to those who are not members of UUC. However, we encourage families to consider membership in our community.

Fees for tuition and church school supplies are based on the number of children enrolled, and the family's membership status at UUC. Scholarships are available.

To register or for more information, email the director of religious education, Sue Williams, or call 206-525-8400, ext. 13.

Visitors

Children are welcome to join a class at any time during the school year. We ask that visitors check in at the church school office for a visitor's slip before going to class. Children may visit church school classes three times before formal registration is required.

Safety and Security

The safety and welfare of our children at UUC is foremost in our minds at all times.

  • Teachers and other volunteers who work with children are carefully screened. They undergo a Washington State Patrol background check and sign a “code of ethics” regarding expectations for “positive” behavior when working with children.
  • We are bound by law to report any suspected case of child abuse.
  • Classroom and out-of-classroom activities (e.g., special events, field trips, playground activity) are supervised.
  • Visitors to classrooms must must first sign-in at the church school office.
  • We hold one fire drill during church school each year. Teachers are responsible for the safe exit of their students. Exit instructions are posted near the door in each classroom.
  • Please bring any safety or security concerns to our attention immediately.

Field Trips

Occasional field trips or other special activities supplement classroom learning, and are planned in advance. Written parental permission is required. Drivers must provide a seat belt for each child.

Library

Our church school library includes a wide range of materials for children, teaching staff, and parents. You may check out books on Sunday mornings during the church school year.

Playground

Teachers supervise children on the playground during the church school session. Children using the playground before or after church must be supervised by their parents or designated adults. The playground is for children from age 3½ years through grade four.
