Lambert House Plate Collection
Last Sunday UUC members generously donated $3,263.68 for Lambert House, a program for LBGTQ youth, in our Second Sunday Plate collection. In his words at the service, Ken Shulman, Director, asked specifically for funds to help renovate their 1930’s era kitchen, where meals for between 20-35 LGBTQ youth are served five days a week by volunteers. For homeless youth, this may be their only meal of the day.
About five years ago Interweave, the UU affiliation group for LGBTQ folk and friends, was reactivated at UUC. Ken Shulman spoke at a Friday night potluck telling us about services Lambert House provides for queer youth in Seattle. The program operates in an old home on 15th Avenue near E. Denny Way in Capitol Hill.
Lambert House provides a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth ages 11-22 years. Open from 4:00-9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, a hot dinner is served daily. As a lesbian, I was so impressed I started volunteering there following three full days of training and have now been there nearly every Wednesday evening for three years. I love sitting at the front desk welcoming youth and sharing computer chores with others on my shift, as we greet the youth, offer assistance as needed, and enjoy a meal with them before we leave. Lambert House provides a supportive, unique, and much needed service.
There are a number of ways for UUC members to volunteer at Lambert House. Drop-in Volunteer shifts are approximately three hours, same day every week. Or UUC could create a Meals Volunteer Team. At least one person would take the training, and be the coordinator. Others could rotate in and out, as long as enough were available to shop and cook. Others could volunteer by providing the funding for food purchases. Meals Volunteers work one day each month to plan, purchase and prepare dinner on-site. If you are interested in volunteering at Lambert House please contact Brandon Knox at 206-322-2515, or apply online at lamberthouse.org/volunteer.
I look forward to UUC having an increased presence at Lambert House!
