January Plate Collection Benefits WAISN

Sunday, January 13, during the 10 a.m. worship service at Meadowbrook Community Center

(Or donate online through January 25.)

Nearly one in seven Washington residents is an immigrant…with one in six workers, immigrants are an integral part of the state’s labor force. Washington receives the 8th highest number of refugees. And, surely everyone in Washington has family, friends, neighbors and co-workers who are immigrants.

The Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN) is a coalition of organizations and individuals, working together, to fight for immigrant justice. Many groups of, by, and for immigrants and refugees have been working throughout the state for decades. But, in the wake of the 2016 election, and the ever-growing threats unleashed against immigrants, this multi-racial, multi-lingual and multi-faith coalition evolved.

On January 13th, the Social Justice Plate Collection will benefit WAISN. UUC has been engaged in immigrant justice for over 3 decades. Learn more about how UUC’s support of WAISN builds upon that history. That work began in the 80’s, with UUC offering sanctuary to those being persecuted in Central America. UUC’s Immigrant Justice Ministry has changed over the years, but there are parallels with that early work…today’s engagement is also focused on accompaniment, hospitality, rapid response and resistance. With WAISN’s focus on building our collective capacity and strength, and centering the voices of impacted communities, its work offers opportunities for UUC to collaborate, partner and engage as part of a collective. Link to information about all of WAISN’s events on their Facebook page. You can also link to more information at WAISN and UUC’s Immigrant Justice Ministry.

Through our solidarity with immigrant communities, we create a beloved community, and truly dive into our first principle–the inherent worth of dignity of everyone . Your gifts to January’s Second Sunday Plate Collection will benefit the ongoing work of WAISN–a mighty immigrant-led organization, reaching across the entire state, with a small staff, along with the support of several dozen immigrant rights organizations and hundreds of individuals committed to the same. On January 13th, your gift to WAISN will help them expand their reach–by adding events for community organizing, increasing their capacity for immigrant advocacy, and more.
