Science Book Discussion Group, September 11
SCIENCE BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
Tuesday, September 11, 7-8:30 p.m., Interim Church Office
The new church year is soon here, and with it the resumption of our reading group! We will meet in the conference room at the UUC interim church office at 5508 35th Ave NE, Suite 100. There are no stairs, so the gathering should be accessible to all.
We will plan to meet twice a month as we did this past year, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Sandy Briggs will lead the discussion of our first book. From Sandy, here’s the first reading assignment:
Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World–and Why Things Are Better Than You Think by Hans Rosling. It pulls global data on lots of different changes over time. “In Hans Rosling’s hands, data sings. Global trends on health and economics come to vivid life.” He has a number of YouTube videos as well if you want to get a quick feel for the author.
This book is a fairly quick read, so I think we can cover it in two meetings, reading chapters 1-5 (pages 1-123) for the September 11 meeting, and finishing the book (chapters 6-11, pp 124-256) on September 25.
We will probably want to choose our next book at the first meeting. We could choose off the list we put together in June, or take new suggestions.
