Letter from Jon, November 2018

Rev. Jon M. LuopaDear Members and Friends:

We have been using our temporary Sunday site at Meadowbrook Community Center for four months now. Attendance has been strong this fall and many visitors have found their way to joining us on Sunday mornings. One key ingredient for this success has been the remarkable set up crew organized by Byron Krystad and Gene Canning. Three cheers for them!

As we approach the winter holidays I have been asked what they will look like at University Unitarian Church in this interim year when we are off campus due to construction. For your planning purposes, here is some information.

We will hold our annual Service of Solace, a special service for those persons living with loss and grief in the holiday season, on Wednesday, December 5, at 7 p.m. This year we will have this service at Beth Shalom Synagogue next to our UUC building. This will be a joint service for members of both congregations.

Our usual holiday evening services, both the Family Candlelight Service and the Christmas Eve Services, will be moved to Sunday MORNINGS. We have had to make this hard decision because the Community Center is closed then and, even if it were not, recruiting set up crews for those evenings would be pretty impossible. So, what does this mean?

Elements of the pageant and the Family Candlelight Service will share the content for our morning service on December 16. The Christmas Eve services of lessons and carols will be the content for the morning service on December 23. Due to fire code restrictions, however, we are not allowed to have candle lighting at either service. Yes, I will miss this special aspect of those services this year, too!

This year the Messiah Singalong will be held at the University Temple United Methodist Church in the U District on Monday, December 26 at 7 p.m. Stayed tuned for more information about tickets for this event.

Let me conclude by thanking you for your flexibility, helpfulness and good cheer in this year of transition. It is noteworthy in a congregation of our size that these have been the ONLY responses we have had from members!

I look forward to seeing you each week!

Warmly,

Jon
