Holiday Giving to benefit Teen Feed – Bring donations along to Sunday services on December 10th & 17th

Teen Feed provides services, support and meals to homeless teens in the University District. On December 3rd, UUC’s meal team prepared and served another meal, as it does 18 times throughout the year. Barbequed chicken, roasted vegetables, fruit salad, chocolate mousse and more….served to a few dozen teens, including a few with their dogs.  16 volunteers on the UUC Meal Team that night, plus several Teen Feed staff, Board members and volunteer advocates offering information about community resources.

Through nightly meals and street outreach, Teen Feed attempts to foster trusting relationship with youth, and then offers support and resources that can help them establish a plan. Teen Feed’s goal — prevent long-term homelessness. So far in 2017, Teen Feed has helped 45 youth transition from homelessness to stable housing.

UUC has partnered with Teen Feed for nearly a dozen years. UUC’s Meal Team includes an intergenerational crew of 25, with most volunteering at 6-8 meals annually — either on the 1st Sunday or the 1st Friday each month.

Like last year, UUC’s holiday giving will focus on Teen Feed, a critical safety net for homeless teens, and a non-profit with whom our congregation has partnered for many years. Winter, and the holidays in particular, are even more challenging for teens living on the streets, couch surfing, or competing for a shelter bed each evening. You can help by donating some of the most needed items.

Bring one or more of the following items to Nathan Johnson Hall after Sunday services on December 10th or December 17th.

  • wool socks (size M-XL)
  • wool winter hats (size M-XL)
  • scarves
  • hoodies (size L & XL/teens prefer no logos or slogans)
  • flannel boxer short-style underwear (size M-XL)
  • gloves (size M-L)
  • headlamps (include batteries)
  • ear buds for personal music players (required at the shelters)
  • water-proof coats (sizes L & XL)
  • long underwear shirts & pants (sizes M-XL)

You can add any of above to your holiday shopping list. Like everyone else, these teens appreciate new items to bring some love and warmth to their holidays. Gently used, clean and teen-appropriate hats, gloves and coats are accepted, too.
